BREAKING: Tinubu's Government Begins Payment of ASUU's Withheld Salaries As Lecturers Recieve Alerts

Federal government lecturers in Nigeria started receiving payments as the federal government under President Bola Tinubu started to pay the money owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The development was confirmed by several academic sources who spoke with The PUNCH on Monday, February 19, 2024.

According to formal records, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, the ASUU chair at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, accepted the development and declared it to be real. The money is starting to flow in.

Recall that after receiving President Bola Tinubu's consent in October 2023, ASUU released the wages that had been withheld for four of the eight months.

In 2022, when several unions at universities embarked on an eight-month strike, former president Muhammadu Buhari's administration applied the "No work, no pay policy" and withheld compensation.

The government has announced a 35% wage increase for university staff, according to Minister of Education Tahir Mamman.

The minister went on to say that the government has granted universities freedom by removing them from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System.

He added that waivers are no longer needed for hiring and filling posts at institutions.

Mamman claims that these choices were made following informal talks with the unions' post-secondary education institutions' headquarters.
