President Bola Tinubu has been designated by the African Union as the Champion for Community Health Delivery Partnership and Human Resources for Health.
In a statement released on Friday by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity "President Tinubu appointed as AU Champion for health," the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this.
He said that the announcement was sent to Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the African Union Commission (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, or Africa CDC), which is led by Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union. The letter stated that the President was appointed based on the recommendation of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of Africa CDC.
Recognition of President Tinubu's commitment to train 120,000 frontline health workers nationwide within 16 months and to double the number of primary health facilities in communities across all local government areas of the federation from 8,800 to over 17,000 over the next three years" was the reason for the appointment, he claimed.
"After he assumed his new position, the Commission invited President Tinubu to speak at the Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme (MELP) on the margins of the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Africa CDC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the theme 'Impactful leadership in health: a whole government approach.'" Ngelale said.
In the meantime, all six of the nation's geopolitical zones will see the immediate upgrade of sixteen crucial pieces of medical equipment and infrastructure, thanks to President Tinubu's approval.
Ajuri Ngelale, the president's media assistant, said in a statement that this is consistent with the administration's goal of reorganizing the health and social welfare sectors to improve service delivery to all Nigerians.
One of the main goals of President Tinubu's Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative is updating medical facilities and equipment.
