JUST IN: APC Declares Edo State Governorship Primary Election Inconclusive

Following the controversy surrounding the contest, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee ruled the governorship primary conducted in Edo State last Saturday to be inconclusive.

After an urgent NWC meeting, the decision was made late on Tuesday.

"The NWC resolves that the Edo State governorship primary election has not been completed and has now fixed Thursday, February 22, 2024, for the completion of the APC primary election process," APC spokesman Felix Morka told reporters following the roughly three-hour meeting.

Three people were declared the winners of the poll, which took place on February 17.

Dennis Idahosa was pronounced the winner by Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Chairman of the Primary Electoral Committee, whereas Monday Okpebholo was declared the winner by Stanley Ugboaja, the Returning Officer.

Anamero Dekeri was pronounced the election's victor by Ojo Babatunde, who claimed to be speaking on behalf of all local governments' returning officers.

Dekeri and Okpebholo had written to the party's appeal committee to request their certificates of return after the chaos that followed.

Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, a different candidate, emphasized on Tuesday that, in contrast to the results that were declared, no election was placed in the state.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, Morka revealed that the election process is still ongoing and that it will resume on Thursday.

"I am here to give you the outcome of the emergency meeting of our party's National Working Committee regarding the Edo State governorship primary election that was held today," he declared.

"The National Working Committee of our party deliberated and decided that the governorship primary election has not been completed and has now set Thursday, February 22 for the completion at its emergency meeting held today, Tuesday, February 20, 2024, to consider the report on the Edo governorship primary election.

Idahosa was earlier commended by the party's National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, on her ascent to the position of nominee.

As of the time of publication, it remained unclear what factors influenced Ganduje's NWC's decision.
